History of the Arts:

Judo

“The Gentle Way”
Judo is the direct descendent of the ancient art of Japanese Ju-jit-su.  In 1882, Jigoro Kano took the most effective moves from Ju-jit-su, as well as some additional techniques, to create the modern art of Judo.

This martial art emphasizes using the minimum effort to achieve the maximum efficiency.  A Judo student can expect to learn many different throws, pins, joint locks, grappling techniques and strangle holds to force his or her opponent into submission.  Skill, timing and technique, rather than the use of brute strength, are the essential ingredients for success in Judo.

People all over the world of all ages practice this amazing martial art, which has been an Olympic sport since 1964.

Tae Kwon Do

“The Art of Hand and Feet Techniques”
Descended from various ancient Korean fighting arts, Tae Kwon Do is the most widely practiced martial art in the United States today.  This dynamic art is well-known for its powerful and spectacular kicks, as well as its devastating efficiency.

Here at Military Arts Institute, we ensure that the spirit of this martial art is maintained by emphasizing its many beautiful forms as well as sparring.  This attention to both important aspects of Tae Kwon Do ensures that our students get a well-rounded, as opposed to one-sided, education in this art.

Tae Kwon Do was included as a full medal Olympic sport beginning with the 2000 Sydney Games.  Those who are interested in its competition aspects are encouraged to represent our school in tournaments around the nation.

Hapkido

“The Art of Coordinated Power”
This once obscure Korean martial art has risen to great popularity in recent years thanks to its very practical techniques and their effectiveness when used in self-defense situations.

Hapkido utilizes an extremely wide range of techniques, including, but not limited to throws, joint locks, arm bars, pins, grappling as well as strikes.

The Hapkido offered here at Military Arts Institute is geared towards practical self-defense.  Students can expect to learn defenses and counters against a wide variety of attach scenarios such as empty-handed strikes, weapons, chokes, grabs, being attacked from a mounted position, and much more.

Not surprisingly, many of our Hapkido students find that they have gained tremendous self-confidence after only a few weeks into this challenging art.

Self Defense Training & Seminars:
City folks everywhere have realized the importance of possessing at least rudimentary self-defense skills to get them safely home on a daily basis.  This is especially true for women as they are often picked by ruthless assailants as “easy” targets.

Let us help you defy that notion of helplessness.

In addition to our regular martial arts courses, Military Arts Institute also offers courses and weekend seminars designed for the busy city-dweller.  Some of these classes are specially designed for women only (rape prevention seminars, for example), while the others are made up of self-defense tactics for everyone in general.
